Algeria-A production of 749,997 quintals (QX) of fruits and vegetables in greenhouses was made for the 2017/2018 agricultural season in the wilaya of Ouargla, revealed the local Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA ).
The enthusiasm shown by farmers in the wilaya on plasticulture has largely contributed to the extension of the area dedicated to this agricultural sector, which has increased from 384.25 hectares (ha) for the 2016/2017 agricultural season , at more than 2,088.38 ha for the current season, explained to the APS the head of department of organization, production and technical support to the DSA.
This craze has had a positive impact on production, which saw its mass leap from 223,825 QX of vegetables and fruit last season, to 749,997 QX this season, particularly in watermelon products, cantaloupe, cucumber, tomato, said Fatiha Boubekri.
This production is carried out on an area of 2,088 ha, of which an area of 1,535 ha dedicated to the cultivation of watermelons, of more than 276 ha for the production of cantaloupe and the remainder devoted to market gardening, tomato, chilli, cucumber, zucchini and other agricultural products in greenhouses, she added.
The "successful" experience of producing watermelons in recent years in the wilaya of Ouargla has resulted in the extension of the production area from 321 ha last season to 1,535 ha this season, concentrated mainly in the regions of Taibet, Bennacer, Mnaguer, and Aouinet Moussa (commune of Sidi Khouiled), she estimated, adding that a harvest of 407,499 quintals has so far been achieved over an area of more than 645 ha, of the total area, an average yield of 600 QX / hectare.
The manager, who recalled that the watermelon harvesting campaign was launched last February, explained this improvement in production by the interest shown by the fellahs for this lucrative crop and the attribution of agricultural land as part of development by concession
In addition to producing 83.145 quintals of cantaloupe produced on an area of 241 ha, a yield of 400 qx / hectare, the DSA reported the harvest of 12,300 qx of tomato, courgette (11,745 qx), cucumber ( 6,600 qx), hot pepper (6,376 qx), sweet pepper (3,600 qx), and other vegetable and fruit products.
