Cuba reaffirms its intention to "coexist peacefully" with the United States

SANTIAGO DE CUBA – Raul Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, reaffirmed Tuesday his country's desire to "coexist peacefully" with the United States despite their political differences.

"We are willing to coexist in a civilized, peaceful, respectful and mutually beneficial way with the United States," he said in Santiago de Cuba (south) at a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Cuban revolution.

The Cuban leader said that "some circles in Washington have bet on more sanctions against Havana" by calling the Caribbean country "the cause of all the evils in the region".

"Cuba is ready to face the confrontation with the United States, a scenario we do not want, and we hope that balanced minds within the US government will put an end to it", he concluded.
