More than 200 scholars claim they will continue to criticize Israel

PARIS- More 200 academics and human rights defenders said in an international appeal that they will continue to "freely" criticize Israel, resist intimidation and say all the harm they think of Israeli policies towards Palestinians .

The signatories of this appeal have spoken out against the recent attacks and dismissals of academics such as Marc Lamont Hill at Temple University (Philadelphia) in the United States, and Tim Anderson at the University of Sydney, Australia.

"Academic institutions must defend freedom of expression and we oppose the campaign in different countries to repress those who defend the rights of Palestinians," said the academics , journalists, human rights activists, doctors, artists and men of culture from several countries, including the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia and Spain.

The appeal, which remains open for new memberships, does not include, for the moment, any signature of French personalities.

The signatories also recalled that other academics like Steven Salaita and Norman Finkelstein have been victims of these attacks, and that similar threats are hanging over Hatem Bazian, Ahlam Muhtaseb, William Robinson, Rabab Abdulhadi, and others, rejecting the exception of defending Palestinian rights to freedom of expression.

"One can criticize freely, and even disrespectfully, when it comes to governments, religions, political opinions, etc., except when it comes to Israeli actions and politics. criticize become the target of generously funded and cleverly orchestrated campaigns to gag and / or destroy them and their careers, "they argued.

They call on all academic institutions, their professors and students, as well as the general public, to "resist these intimidation tactics and defend the principles of freedom of expression on which they are based, as well as all free societies and their institutions. "
