CARACAS – Nine Venezuelan soldiers were sentenced to prison terms of five to eight years for a plot to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro in 2014, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) announced on Wednesday.
Among the convicts are General Oswaldo Hernandez, retired Lieutenant-Colonel Jose Delgado and seven other officers from the Air, Land and Navy armies, according to a statement from the Supreme Court.
The highest court confirmed the sentences handed down in the first instance after its cassation chamber and court martial dismissed appeals filed by the military.
The latter, arrested in March and May 2014, were tried for "preparing in 2014 an insurrectional and destabilizing movement, dubbed + Operation Jericho +, against the national government".
According to excerpts from the press kit, the project consisted of seizing military detachments, arresting Nicolas Maduro and other Chavism leaders and mobilizing citizens to overthrow the government.
