Marrakech – "The Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration" submitted since Monday to an international conference in Marrakech, initiated by the United Nations, in the presence of States adhering to the Covenant and those of international organizations, pleads for ideal practices in migration.
During the first day, participants called for measures to honor the commitments made under the Global Compact, also emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of the migration, while it is expected Tuesday the official adoption of the document related thereto.
In this respect, the speakers advocated the creation of adequate socio-economic and political conditions in order to provide migrants with decent living opportunities in their country of origin, in addition to the establishment of programs to facilitate the return and readmission of migrants in safety and dignity.
In addition, the speakers called on the international community to consult and promote the exchange of information between countries of origin, transit and reception, in order to better manage migratory flows and promote legal migration routes, highlighting the benefits that migrants offer to host countries, including through their contribution to the country's economic development.
In this sense, the representatives of the States invited the international community to fight against the smuggling of migrants, in particular by reinforcing the transnational action in this matter, while adopting the legislative measures necessary to face the networks of traffickers.
The speakers concluded their dialogue by reaffirming the importance of transforming the vision of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration into a reality common to countries adhering to the document.
This dialogue is part of the work of the first day of the Intergovernmental Conference on Migration, marked by the formal adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
