WASHINGTON – The partial closure of federal administrations and agencies in the United States came into effect Friday at midnight after the failure of Republicans and Democrats to reach a budget compromise.
The US Senate which was to approve a draft budget adopted Thursday by the House of Representatives to avoid blocking funding from the federal government adjourned Friday night its work.
Democrats have so far resisted pressure from Donald Trump, who has asked for $ 5 billion to finance the construction of a border wall with Mexico.
In exchange the Democrats proposed a $ 1.6 billion financing, deemed insufficient by Vice President Mike Pence who attended Friday part of the work of the Senate alongside Jared Kushner, the adviser to President Trump .
The White House's budget chief, Mick Mulvaney, Friday night shut down a quarter of the federal administrations and agencies.
The partial closure concerns some departments such as Commerce, Justice and Homeland Security.
The rest of the departments will be spared because a congressional budget covers 75% of federal spending until September 2019, including the Pentagon.
Nearly 800,000 government employees are at risk of technical unemployment if the Shutdown lasts until the beginning of next week.
In a video message posted on his tweeter account, the head of the White House blamed the Democrats for the partial closure of federal agencies.
"We are going towards a closure, we can not do anything about it because we need the Democrats to give us their voice," he said, hoping the Shutdown will not last long.
