GENEVA – The first session of the round table in Geneva on Western Sahara, initiated by the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General of the UN for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler, ended late Wednesday afternoon.
This meeting is the first of its kind in six years and is taking place, according to UN Security Council Resolution 2440, which enjoined both parties to the conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front. , to resume negotiations "without preconditions and in good faith" with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that will allow the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.
Algeria participates in this Round Table as a neighbor and observer country. Nothing has filtered from this first session that will be followed, according to the program, another meeting Thursday and after which a press conference will be hosted by the UN envoy. Shortly before the works, Horst Kohler met separately with the heads of delegation participating in this round table.
In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, assured the UN envoy of Algeria's commitment to the smooth running of the round table on the Western Sahara conflict.
"Mr. Messahel assured Kohler of the commitment of Algeria, as a neighboring country, to contribute to the smooth running of the Geneva Round Table to revive the process of negotiations between the two parties to conflicts , the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front ", told the APS a source close to the Algerian delegation, after the meeting of the minister with the UN envoy.
During this meeting, the head of Algerian diplomacy reiterated Algeria's support for the efforts of the Personal Envoy who was expressed to him by the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, on the occasion of the the hearing he granted on 23 October 2017, with a view to reaching a settlement of the Western Sahara conflict in accordance with international law and the relevant United Nations resolutions,
