3 Turkish soldiers killed in operations

Three Turkish soldiers were killed today in clashes with Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq, the army said in a statement.

The three men died "in a clash with members of the separatist terrorist organization," according to the military, which refers to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), classified as "terrorist" by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

The north of Iraq, where the PKK has rear bases, is regularly bombed by the Ankara air force and the Turkish security forces sporadically make incursions. On Tuesday, the army announced that another soldier had been killed in an attack on the PKK and fought back with air strikes.
