Algeria – The Republic of Madagascar is moving towards pluralist presidential elections as part of a democratic process accompanied by the African Union
Former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra has been leading the process for several months, the first result of which is the resignation of President Hery in accordance with the Constitution.
"The resignation of the President of the Republic of Madagascar, Hery Martial Rajaonarimampianina, in accordance with the Malagasy Constitution, and the appointment, on September 7, 2018, of the President of the Senate, Rivo Rakotovao, as Acting President of Madagascar, are major steps towards free, inclusive and peaceful presidential elections on November 7, 2018, "said the spokesman for the European Union on Sunday.
"The Malagasy parties confirm their respect for the rule of law and their desire to anchor institutional stability," he said.
"The European Union will continue to work with the African Union and its High Representative, Minister Ramtane Lamamra, and will mobilize all its resources, including the sending of an Election Observation Mission, to the next presidential elections, "concludes the EU spokesperson in his statement on the official website of the European Union.
