Mali: beginning of the process of disarmament and demobilization in Gao

The process of "Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration" (DDR) was launched, Tuesday, November 06, 2018, by the Malian authorities in Gao.

Representatives of the government, political-military groups that signed the Algiers Process Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, and the UN Mission (Minusma) participated in the Gao ceremony.

"There will be no taboo subject, today's ceremony is a launch and the dialogue continues," said Lassine Bouaré, Minister of National Cohesion and Reconciliation.

"Appropriate responses will be provided in accordance with the standard DDR process and where possible," he promised, adding that combatants who so wish "may come forward to complete the formalities".

"The registration gave a force of 34,000 combatants. The launching ceremony went well with the participation of all the leaders of the signatory movements. For the future, it is to see who will be screened (selection) because the exercise is voluntary, "said the chairman of the DDR National Commission, Zahabi Sidi Ould Mohamed.
